Electromagnetic fields are being used for solving a number of technical problems in underwater research. Electromagnetic systems, compared with existing acoustic systems have a number of distinctive features. So, to establish a baseline of understanding, we firstly present an overview of environmental aspects which impact monitoring at sea of electromagnetic signals: brief summary of water properties, propagation of harmonic electromagnetic waves in sea water, interference to reception in underwater electromagnetic systems. Secondly, last developments on Induction fields and Electrical fields sensors in the ELF range are illustrated. And finally, a description is made for a shallow water sea bed system for observation of the surrounding environment.
