The comfort performance of a magnetic levitation vehicle based on the passive repulsive levitation scheme is investigated. The aim of the work is the definition of the configuration of a demonstrator which will include a levitating platform travelling on a certain length of magnetic rail. As the work is focused mainly on the vertical motions, the study is performed using 'quarter car' models, with a different number of degrees of freedom. The analysis shows that a secondary suspension is needed, not only to increase the comfort but also to avoid contacts between stationary and moving permanet magnets. A passive system with a secondary suspension allows to avoid such contacts, but grants the required comfort only at reduced speed. If the device is used for high speed transportation, active dampers are needed to control the stable modes, transforming a two-active axes suspension system into one based on a five active-axes layout.
