Short pitch corrugation are more or less periodic pattern on the rail tread. This type of corrugation is found on straight tracks and the wavelength typically varies between two and ten centimetres. Based on previous work a linear mathematical model for the description of the transient wheel-rail dynamics has been set up. The model considers the discrete support of the rail, elasticity of the wheelset, all six degrees of freedom of wheel and rail, transient creepage, shift of the contact point and filter effects at short wavelengths. A feedback between transient wheel-rail dynamics and a damage mechanism is assumed for the long-term corrugation process: A wheelset rolls over the initial profile irregularity on the rail. After this wheel passage the rail surface is damaged, which modifies the initial profile irregularity. The next wheelset rolls over the modified profile which damages the rail surface again. Calculations of the wear pattern after a high number of wheel passages show the effect of operational parameters and the influence of wheelset motion. Based on numerical results it is demonstrated that due to contact mechanical effects short pitch corrugation grows within a fixed wavelength band. This could explain observations in the field, where it is found that the wavelength of short pitch corrugation varies only little with the vehicle speed.
