Modeling and control problems associated with vehicle lateral control for automated highway systems (AHS) were presented. Main emphasis was on lane following of passenger vehicles. Related problems such as lane change maneuvering, backward driving, fault detection and lateral control of heavy vehicles were reviewed. Research at PATH combines both analysis and experimentation, and PATH played a major role in the successful 1997 NAHSC Demonstration. While the lateral control problem was presented in this paper from the viewpoint of AHS, a large part of the dynamic modelling, sensing problem and controller design for lateral control may be applied to other situations including driver assistance and safety enhancement of vehicles on non-automated highways.
