The vehicle control should be of a robust design that can out-maneuver the changes in such vehicle running environments as weather and road conditions. The authors, therefore, proposed a vehicle control system using a navigation system as a means to built up a redundancy system employing a multiple sensor system rather than single sensor system. In view of the result of experiments conducted on a vehicle control system in conjunction with these systems, the following points have been confirmed. 1. Regardless of the presence of magnetic nails, the vehicle position and its yaw characteristic can be continuously obtained with high accuracy. 2. By placing imaginary magnetic nails on the map data base, it is possible to run a vehicle on any desired course. From the result of our study, the authors concluded that it will be possible, by combining a navigation system with the lane recognition technology using magnetic nails as an image processing system indispensable for obtaining the continuous outside information; 1. to have lane recognition even with non-continuous external informations, and 2. to predict the approaching road configuration which has not been a strong point of either the image processing system or the magnetic nail sensor system.
