A project has been undertaken to investigate the limits of engine rating at the possible Euro 4 NOx levels for heavy-duty engines. A newly designed 4 valve single cylinder engine of about 1 dm3 swept volume was used, fitted with a common rail injection system and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The 'short route' manifold to manifold EGR system was assumed. Performance and emissions are reported at 3-4g/kWh NOx over a range of air/fuel ratios, injection timings, fuel rail pressures and boost pressures. The intention was to explore the relationship between engine rating, boost pressure and maximum cylinder pressure. The results of a short investigation of very early pilot injection are included.
