The Gas Research Institute (GRI) initiated a project to survey the largest U.S. and Canadian airports to obtain general information to help characterize current market scope and the potential for additional application of natural gas vehicles (NGVs). Alternative fuel vehicles, of which natural gas vehicles are one type, were identified at 37, approximately 90 percent of the airports for which information was obtained. In addition to airports with in-place alternative fuel vehicles, plans for expansion of alternative fuel vehicle programs were found at most airports. NGVs were the most common type of alternative fuel vehicle, followed by electric vehicles and propane vehicles. Although activity was widespread, over 80 percent of the total existing NGVs were found at five airports. Concern with air quality was the primary motivating factor behind these large programs. Shuttle buses were identified as the best marketing opportunity for NGVs. Taxicabs, limousines, and airport operations vehicles were also determined to offer good NGV market potential. Ground service vehicles, which provide various types of support to aircraft at the gates, and for which the alternative fuel of choice appears to be predominantly electricity, were determined to be a more difficult market for NGVs, in terms of near-term market penetration.
