Co-operation between shipyard or design office and classification society is facilitated by exchange and sharing of geometry and functional models instead of paper drawings. Computer supported approval techniques - including rule scantlings and direct calculations - are taking advantage of the 3D data models generated by various CAD systems. The calculation results can be returned to the design system to support design decisions. STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) technology is shown to be a solid basis for the definition ship product models as well as for their implementation. Most relevant in the context of class approval are the data models for Ship Moulded Forms and Steel Structures developed within ISO as well as for Hull Cross Section Approval Data, developed by members of the European Marine STEP Association.
