The authors have developed a two-dimensional scanning laser radar as a forward recognition sensor for ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) systems. By using two-dimensional scanning the authors have increased the vertical detection area, and have greatly reduced wrong target detection or target loss by separating signs and vehicles or by excluding white lines. Therefore recognition performance has been greatly improved. This laser radar was actually adopted in the Toyota Lexus LS400, and was mass produced in 1997 only in Japan. The authors would like to continue to improve its performance and reduce its cost for use in future ACC systems.
