Contact between the head of the driver and the steering wheel on frontal and 'off-set' impacts, specially on low percentile male and female, can lead to serious injuries due to considerable increase on head deceleration. Furthermore, in a large range of drivers anthropometry, the space between head and steering wheel should be greater for a optimal efficiency of the air-bag device. In the present work we introduce the Retractable Steering Wheel als a system designed to avoid or minimize contact between head, face and chest driver and the steering wheel, as well as to improve roominess for optimizing kinematics of both head driver and air-bag displacement on frontal impacts. MADYMO simulations are here analyzed and discussed.
