The purpose of the research reported in this paper is to develop a conceptualization of a guideway-type Automated Highway System (AHS) constructed in the rights-of-way of the Interstate Highway System. Guideway-Freeway Interchanges would provide the interface between the two systems and Guideway-Guideway Interchanges would be used where two guideways intersect. Mathematical models of guideway volume-speed relationships, platoon stability, critical gap determinations for merging, weaving operations, trip distribution, and link assignment are described in the paper.
