The coupled vibration of the brake rotor and pad generates a sometimes uncomfortable noise. It may also have a negative effect on braking performance. Simulation with finite element models and computational analysis of the problem has been done for over a decade. The computational accuracy and efficiency of such analyses, however requires a very robust and efficient complex eigenvalue solution technique, not available until recently. The new adaptive, block, bi-orthogonal Lanczos method fulfills this requirement. The paper will first describe the physical model of a brake, followed by the finite element representation of the problem. The cornerstone of the computation, the robust and efficient adaptive, block, bi-orthogonal Lanczos method will then be discussed. Finally an automobile industry example will be used to demonstrate the real life practical application of the method.
