Developers of new electronic systems must demonstrate both that the system satisfies its functional specification, and that it satisfies all applicable safety, electromagnetic compatibility and environmental requirements. These tasks are sometimes collectively termed 'Platform Validation'. Validation of a Connected Car Personal Computer needs to include not only the validation tasks mentioned above, but also tests to show that the system is compatible with the vast range of personal computer applications. Platform validation strategies used for Intel's first Connected Car PC are discussed. The system is not a commercial product, but is a reference platform to assist Intel's customers with their own designs. Aspects of platform validation that are discussed include computer system hardware validation, software validation, physical environmental testing (vibration, shock, temperature and humidity, and electromagnetic compatibility, radiated emissions, radiated susceptibility, and conducted susceptibility). Car PC software validation must include testing of both CAR PC-specific software and representative personal computer legacy applications. Because of its complexity, software validation receives extended coverage.
