Higher engine room temperature and longer warranty periods for automobiles in recent years make it imperative for automotive designers involved in plastic parts to have a very good understanding of the thermo-oxidation reactions and their effect on the life of plastic parts. In this paper, a new method for rapidly predicting the thermal deterioration and the service life using thermal analysis is presented, along with a technique to measure the thermal deterioration speed reaction which is based on reaction kinetics. A new method of deducing the activation energy of thermal deterioration that would take place under a realistic service environment from the information obtained at much higher temperature, is proposed. This method allows faster assessment of the thermo-oxidation life of plastic materials.
