The density stratification profile (pycnocline) in the sea is usually concentrated within a narrow layer located near the upper surface. This layer is commonly referred to as a thermocline (Lighthill, 1978) due to its association with temperature differences and salinity differences. As a result a vessel moving in such inhomogeneous medium creates an internal wave wake behind it. This kind of wake is usually narrower and much longer than the common Kelvin surface wake. The internal wave wake induced by a ship has been a subject to a considerable research in the last few decades. The purpose of this study is to examine Barber's (1993) exponential series representation for the density stratification and to combine it with the inverse approach of Avital and Miloh (1994) so as to yield a practical indirect method for estimating the density stratification in the sea from measurements of the wake pattern. It is shown that when the series converges with a low number of coefficients, the inverse profile is adequate, as happens for example for typical sea loch profiles. In more general circumstances the predicted maximum stratification still provides a reasonable approximation as a result of Barber's (1993) theorem.
