In order to realize an on-board system able to implement the vehicle anti-collision function, a sensor to acquire the three-dimensional image is needed. It must have ultra high spatial resolution (millions of voxels of 10 x 10 x 10 centimeter) in the whole automotive frontal range (down 200 m x cross 20 m x up 10 meter). Using the millimeter carrier, these requirements can not be obtained by the usual radar phased array techniques; in fact to achieve high accuracy in angular position, large antennas have to be used so that the investigation volume falls in the near-field region of the antenna. The proposed solution is based on a system with one transmitting antenna, a crossed array of antenna-receiver channels and a digital signal processing system for the holographic reconstruction to obtain the three-dimensional radar image. This solution requires low complexity millimeter circuits but high real-time processing power. The transmitted signal is a compressed millimeter pulse, the returning echoes detected at each receiver element interfere with part of the transmitted signal and produce an interference pattern (the hologram). The implemented reconstruction process elaborates the hologram to give the 3-D image of the scene.
