The demand of today's automobile market require the use of advanced lightweight materials in series production. In this area continuous fibre reinforced composites may be the material of the future. This paper describes several promising manufacturing processes for composites. One of the most sophisticated techniques with regard to a future series production is the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) process. Latest experiences obtained with an actual bicycle frame production and an industrial project investigating in big automotive parts are presented. Main problems like surface quality, preforming, mechanical properties and automation are defined and solutions are depicted. The RTM technique offers a promising basis for a future cost effective series production. Thermoplastic composites present better conditions for recycling than thermosets. Two new techniques for thermoplastic composite series processing are described. The diaphragm forming process allows highly complex parts with high shaping ratios and without. A fast alternative to this process has been developed and presented in this paper: the Explosive Diaphragm Forming (EDF) technique shortens the cycle time significantly. Procedures for class-A surface quality are presented. The pressmoulding process is widely used in industrial applications. However main problems like wrinkling of the fibre reinforcement and low shaping ratios have to be solved to allow a series production of automotive parts. Methods for an improved processing are described. This study shows that the cost effective use of advanced fibre reinforced composites in automotive applications can be realised in the near future. A combination of different manufacturing processes and even material combinations must be considered to meet the special requirements of the automobile industry.
