Whether electric propulsion succeeds beyond small numbers of specialised vehicles into real alternatives for the customer will depend on many factors. Most important is the storage or genration of electrical energy of sufficient quantity in a competitive manner on the vehicle. This paper reviews the electrical energy 'challenge' by drawing on the knowledge of progress across the world into batteries, flywheels and super-capacitors from both a technical performance and commercialisation viewpoint. The paper considers the potential success of electric drive and makes estimates of the electrical energy storage technologies that are most likely to be able to support it.
