Large vehicles - e.g. large sized buses - tend to deviate from a straight path in three modes: slight deviation at low speed, weaving at medium speed, and oscillation at high speed. To understand the modes, a linear 4DOF model consisting of one sprung mass and two unsprung masses at the front and the rear is developed. The fundamental differences of this 4DOF model to the conventional two wheeled 2DOF model and the two wheeled model with complex-cornering-power are that the unsprung mass, the compliance steer angle, and the compliance lateral deviation of unsprung masses were included. The inclusion of these three items is necessary for the on-centre stability discussion. By analysis of calculations and experiments of vehicle behaviour and eigenvalues, it was found that the instance compliance centres of the front and rear strongly effect the on-centre stability. The further the instance centre is towards the front and the rear, the better the on-centre stability. The existence of an ISP (inflection speed point) is confirmed.
