The drive towards improved fuel economy and lower emissions for gasoline and Diesel vehicles requires development of catalysts capable of converting nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a lean exhaust gas environment. This paper reviews the approaches that are being considered for this purpose and describes in more detail two areas that have been investigated: a systems approach to improve the performance of platinum catalysts on a light duty Diesel vehicle, and the application of lean-NOx catalysts to lean gasoline and light duty Diesel engines.
