After analyses and comparison of the different types of CVT (continuously variable transmissions) for automobiles, the mechanical frictional CVT with metal V-belt has been chosen to be applied for Chinese cars. This type of CVT has appropriate ranges of transmission ratio (up to 6 or 8) and transmissible power, associated with relatively simple structure and low cost. Key problems in the research and development of this CVT are, among others, those connected with the transmitting frictional pair and the related automatic self-tight-pressing actuator, the transmission ratio control logic and the related automatic control system. A better flexible transmission element, called H-belt, has been developed and compared with the Dutch VDT belt. One of its most important distinctions from the VDT belt is that the multilayer rings have been displaced from the top to the middle of the stiff elements resulting in H-shape. The H-belt multilayer ring can never escape from the H-grooved elements. It has a smaller volume, weight and moment of inertia. A purely mechanical self-tight-pressing device has been constructed, which has no specific control system and consumes almost no power. The specifically developed control system is capable of keeping engine speed always at the engine's optimal performance parameters. Results of CVT prototype tests show that these strategies are helpful in ensuring proper function and reduction of costs. The type of CVT tested is of real application potential under Chinese conditions.
