Development of accurate models for silencer elements leads to possibilities to evaluate exhaust or intake systems already at early development stages in projects. As not much change in the overall volume of the system is permissible at later stages of the project, the designers need simple-to-use tools, to evaluate various silencer configurations and to convince project managers of, for example, the need for 'large volumes' that are not directly recognised by customers as useful as, for instance, large fuel tanks are. In this work a comprehensive computer program with a user-friendly graphical interface has been written to predict transmission and insertion loss characteristics, based on the transmission matrix formulation, tail-pipe noise, low frequency structural properties and an estimate of the back-pressure and weight of an automobile exhaust system. Various configurations of realistic silencers can easily be assembled by click-and-drag and analysed by designers. The program includes approximately 25 standard elements, such as tubes, area discontinuities, extended in- and outlets, horns, elements for catalytic converters, resonators, perforated elements and dissipative elements.
