This paper presents the results of a study conducted by the Clean Air Vehicle Technology Center (CAVTC) to characterize the performance of state-of-the-art electric vehicles (EVs) for the purpose of assessing their potential for fleet and personal use. Another aspect of this work involved the use and adaptation of existing EV test procedures to create a standard test protocol that provides data that are reproducible and representative of real use operations. The project involved conducting a series of laboratory tests with a dynamometer under repeatable and controlled conditions. These lab tests measured four critical attributes: 1) Range: 2) Acceleration; 3) Top speed; 4) Energy efficiency. This paper discusses and compares the results of laboratory and on-road testing performed on two prototypes of near-term EVs to be introduced soon by major manufacturers. These EVs were both powered by nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries. The paper then compares these results to those of laboratory tests for a similar EV powered by a lead-acid battery. In addition to demonstrating the practicality of the test protocol, the test results indicated that the NiMH-powered vehicles have roughly 70-80 mile ranges (nearly twice that of the lead-acid battery vehicle), making them practical alternatives for many uses.
