Over several years incremental improvements have been made in reducing the atmosphere consumption of continuous aluminium brazing furnaces used for the production of automotive heat exchangers. Recently the use of computational fluid dynamics to model the atmosphere has led to insights which have allowed the development of a dynamic control system designed to minimise atmosphere consumption while maintaining product quality. The resultant product, Nitrapilot, provides for its users a step change in consumption which can be implemented without major changes to the furnace operation. The application of Nitrapilot to flow minimisation in a continuous aluminium brazing furnace is described together with the results obtained. It is shown that the use of the equipment reduced the overall gas usage of the furnace by more than 30 %.
