To achieve high mechanical properties with standard die casting alloys, heat treatment is indispensable. Forced by market demand we were challenged to develop Magsimal-59, an alloy that provides sophisticated mechanical properties without heat treatment. This alloy is of the AlMg5MnSi2-type with an iron content of < 0.13 wt.%. This is a breakthrough in pressure die casting where during decades the soldering problem has prevented the application of ductile casting alloys especially with low iron content. Magsimal-59 is designed for applications with extraordinary mechanical and dynamic properties. The new alloy provides without heat treatment > 150 MPa yield strength, > 250 MPa ultimate tensile strength and more than 15 % tensile elongation. These properties require a casting process with high solidification rates like squeeze casting or high pressure die casting. The paper describes the basics of the alloy, manufacture of the castings, the application and component properties.
