Madison Chemical Industries (Milton, Ontario) and ICI Polyurethanes (Sterling Heights, MI) developed a new polyurethan coating for use as corrosion resistant cladding material of construction for underground steel storage tanks. The polyurethane coating is trademarked under the name FibreThane, and the storage tank finished by this coating is called ComposiTank which is used by Highland Tank Co. (Stoystown, PA). During rotating the storage tank by a motorized spinner, the polyurethan coating is applied with a film thickness of 70 mils to meet the requirements of the UL Standard. The coatings cure in 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Two other types of storage tanks (STI-P3 tank coated with a 15-mil-component urethane, ACT-100 tank coated with a polyester resin chopped by fiberglass for reinforcing) are made by Highland Tank Co. A self-reinforcing protective coating is created by the high cross-linked density of the resin. Besides three types of protective systems (galvanic-typ cathodic protection, fiberglass-reinforced systems, jacketed systems) for underground storage tanks certified under UL 1746 Standard, Underwriters Laboratories certifies a fourth typ to UL's Standards (polyurethane and composite of steel). The coating is highly durable and once it is buried underground, it does not require monitoring.
