The effect of PEO (polyethylene oxide) addition on the reduction of pipe friction for sea-water and the degradation of its effect by stirring are studied experimentally. The effect of PEO addition on the reduction of pipe friction is degraded approximately 64 % after stirring by centrifugal pumps. The flow visualization using a tracer method reveals that the PEO addition does not change the velocity profile of laminar flow, but that the PEO addition changes the time-averaged velocities and velocity fluctuations of turbulent flow in the circular pipe. The stirring by centrifugal pumps cuts the long chain of PEO with higher molecular weight and degrades the effect of PEO addition on the reduction of pipe friction.
