For offshore drilling operations, one of the challenges in deep water of the over 2000 m range is that of developing a reliable and safe method of rapidly recovering or disconnecting the riser upon the approach of a storm. The large amount of time required to pull a 2,000m riser, combined with uncertainties in storm path and size prediction can lead to safety concerns for both personnel and vessel. Both contractors and operators would benefit from a system allowing a riser to be easily abandoned and later re-entered in deepwater. Several concepts exist for near surface riser disconnection in normal operations as well as for emergency location evaluation, as shown by the 667m water depth Garden banks 388 free standing production riser system. Several necessary technologies, such as (special) buoyancy systems and underwater mating cable conections have been developed and can be used to achieve complete system integration. This paper describes a concept of near surface drilling riser disconnection or NSDDR.
