Over the past 4 years there have been developments in the use of polymer materials as a replacement for hardened steel pivot bushes in bogie brakegear. A polyamide material has been particularly successful in reducing in-service maintenance by preventing brake calliper seizure and increasing component life whilst reducing costs. The polyamide material was used initially as a replacement for the brake calliper bushes in combination with stainless steel pivot pins on the MK3/HST InterCity rolling stock bogies. The original objective was to reduce the frequency of calliper seizures in service, which often led to time consuming maintenance work to free them. The latest indications are that incidents of calliper seizure have reduced dramatically on these bogies and that after 600000 miles in service the pin and bush wear is negligible. After cleaning at overhaul, the pivot pins are in an as-new condition. The expectations are that 1.2 million miles between calliper overhaul are possible; twice the previous overhaul period. Other applications for this material are under trial and early results indicate that they will be equally successful. As with all changes there are some risks involved. This paper shows how the risks have been managed and gives further details regarding the benefits of the material and other applications for its use.
