This paper presents an overview of the different types of procurement used by owners to purchase Automated People Movers (APMs). These procurement types range from those entailing less risk for the contractor such as a Design-Build procurement contract limited to the systems portion, to those entailing less risk for the owner, probably the turnkey type of contract. Others such as the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) procurements very fashionable today are also described. Finally, the FDBOM, which requires the Contractor to develop a financial proposal as to the manner in which the system should be financed in addition to the requirements of the DBOM, is a very challenging procurement approach that will be addressed. The characteristics, problems and the recommended solutions to the problems encountered for each of these procurement types are described in this paper. Actual issues and solutions, as they have been implemented on several recent APMs, projects will be detailed.
