Natural gas for vehicles (NGV) as a fuel for road vehicles is attractive for its low emissions of photochemical precursors and particulate matter, and possible greenhouse gas advantage dependent on the natural gas source. In some markets, NGV may have further economic and strategic advantage. Compressed natural gas is the preffered form of NGV delivery, but liquefied natural gas may have a future application particularly for high use heavy duty vehicles. Absorbed natural gas has the advantage of a lower pressure system for the same storage, but the technology is not yet mature, and gas cleanliness requirements are stringent. Light duty vehicle conversion to NGV is still dominantly external retrofit technology, but some optimized sole fuel NGV light duty vehicles are appearing. The emissions and efficiency advantages of optimized vehicles are great. Heavy duty dedicated NGV engines and vehicles, particularly buses, are now available from original equipment manufacturers and have proven reliability in field experience. NGV heavy duty vehicles have emissions advantages over the diesel vehicle, but in general are less energy efficient. The acceptability of NGV on a large scale by vehicle operators will depend on the development of a fuel supply infrastructure. To accelerate the acceptability of the new fuel it is likely that special incentive will be needed for both the operators and the fuel suppliers.
