A detailed parametric investigation into the flutter characteristics of cantilevered composite wings has been carried out. The investigation has shown that it is very useful to use the ratio of the (uncoupled) fundamental bending and torsional natural frequencies (omegah/omegaalpha) as a parameter to investigate the flutter characteristics of composite wings. When this ratio is above around 0.1, the results show that for the type of composite wings investigated, very significant improvement in flutter speed can be achieved by utilizing the bending-torsion coupling effect arising out from directional properties of fibrous composites. When this ratio is below this value, there is no substantial benefit from the coupling effect to improve the flutter speed while maximizing the torsional rigidity (GJ) is shown to be more beneficial. Some of the principal results of the parametric investigation are confirmed by carrying out an optimization study using the computer program ADS.
