In the optimization and evaluation of climate control in the passenger section of cars, the auto industry relies heavily on experiments. A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the dynamic features of automotive vehicle's air condition (A/C) system and to predict the temperature and humidity variations inside the passenger compartment under the most realistic operating conditions. The transient nature of the passenger cabin temperature, seat mass average surface temperature, and humidity are modeled using three coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations based on vapor mass balance and energy balance. These equations are then solved by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method with adaptive step size control. Solutions are validated using available test data. It is shown that the model developed can be used to determine what factors most significantly effect the temperature and humidity patterns of the passenger space, and the time required to attain steady-state condition. Code also allows the designer for A/C system component sizing and optimization. Parametric studies reveal that the methodology described can provide a useful insight into how a vehicle may be cooled more efficiently.
