From 1992 to 1994 a research program for electric vehicles (EVs) was carried out in Austria. Interviews were made with 2200 Austrian car owners about their knowledge and possible reasons to buy an EV. 135 EV owners were asked, why they bought an EV and if they are satisfied with it. Additionally their social background and the mobility function of the EV in their household was investigated. The driving behavior with the EV and its technical performance was observed for a smaller sample. EVs and EV-drivers have a very good image in Austria. The technical performance of EVs is well known. 95 % of the Austrians are principally interested in buying an EV. The typical EV-owner is a 30 to 50 year old male with reasonable (technical) education. A significant difference occurs between the one seated City-El from Denmark (77 % market share, drivers license free) and conventional EVs. City-EL owners do not differ from average Austrian people. Owners of conventional EVs are typical 'pioneers' and use the EV mainly because of joy of innovation, an environmental sensitivity and a kind of ecological trend-setting. About 2/3 of the EVs are at least second-cars. EV-owners drive slightly smoother than ordinary car-drivers.
