In this paper, a method for minimizing the sound transmitted through a composite panel is presented. The panel models a trim panel of an aircraft and is mounted on a stiffened fuselage skin section. The method minimizes sound transmission by minimizing the volume velocity of segments of the panel. For each segment, an array of accelerometers is used to sense the panel's volume velocity while a loudspeaker is used to produce an equivalent, but out-of-phase, volume velocity for control. Analytical models are presented which show sound power reductions of 15 to 25 dB are possible at single frequencies. Experiments using an open loop SISI controller, conducted in the CAV's transmission loss chamber verify these results.
