The effects of a slippery road variable message system (VMS) and an individual headway recommendation VMS on driver behaviour as well as the user acceptance of these new signs were studied. The study was performed as a before and after experiment at four test sites in Finland. The user acceptance was quite high. The slippery road VMS signs reduced the average driving speeds on slippery roads by 2-4 km/h. The headway recommendation VMS lengthened the headways and decreased the proportion of critically short headways. The effects were considerably smaller during the second winter, indicating the existence of 'novelty' effects.
