To realize a reliable collision avoidance system, drivers' responses and behavioral changes while using such a system need to be studied carefully. A driving simulator which had a large motion system and could reproduce emergency braking situations was exploited to study the effects of a collision warning system on drivers' braking behavior. 45 young male drivers were tested in the simulator and braking reaction times with and without collision warning were analyzed. It was found that the average braking reaction time was substantially shortened with collision warning and the frequency of simulated collision was also reduced.
