The predicted requirements for reliable engine of greater thrust and fuel economy for future civil subsonic transports, will undoubtedly put the task of minimising low and high altitude emissions of nitrogen oxides under strong pressure. The development of future aircraft gas turbine may therefore face a watershed, so that we may soon assist the introduction of emissions as a cycle parameter in the preliminary design of aero engines. Using a computer system developed at Cranfield University, this paper describes a method to analyse the interplay between the requirements of performance, fuel economy and low emissions in the selection of aero engine cycles both at design point and over complete flight missions. Using a B747-400 flying the London-Sidney route, the emissions of nitrogen oxides for various cruise flight plans are then analysed.
