3M and Honeywell have worked together to develop a magnetic marking system that shows excellent potential providing lateral location information of a vehicle on a road. The system is comprised of a magnetic pavement marking tape and a magneto-resistive sensor. The system has high reliability, all wether performance, zero power requirements in the road and is compatible with existing methods for installation of pavement markings. Potential applications for this system include vehicle line deviation sensing, snowplow lateral guidance, docking systems for transit vehicles and information systems for road geometries and traffic control informations.
