In order to detect an obstacle ahead accurately, a forward-looking sensor including an image sensor and a Millimeter-Wave Radar was used to cancel false recognition of an image or an eroneous detection of a roadside object by the Millimeter-Wawe Radar on an actual vehicle while confirming the warning and the auto-brake operation correctly. An algorithm for detecting the curve radius and inter-vehicle distance and on-board high-velocity image processing hardware, for performing these procedures in real time, can be realized. When this forward-looking sensor is applied, however, countermeasures must be taken with respect to the following subjects. Image sensor: Dissappearance of the image at tunnel entrance and exit, detection failure of lane marks and vehicle during night, false recognition in rain or fog, recognition of pedestrians. For the Millimeter-Wawe Radar erroneous detection of vehicles on adjacent lanes needs to be eliminated.
