Electric rheostatic braking has formed a fundamental part of the modern train's braking system for some years. As the popularity of regenerative braking increases for the obvious reason of operating economy, so the opportunity to derate the train's rheostatic braking capability will become ever more apparent. Such a feature is to everyone's advantage. Not only can it be used to reduce the capital equipment costs, but it also reduces the long term operating costs. With close co-operation between customer, car builder and traction equipment supplier, the opportunity to perform true system engineering presents itself. By using 'state of the art' multi train simulation software and timetable predictions, effective underframe positioning and material choice, naturally cooled frames in compact and arduous underframe conditions will soon be a reality. This presupposes that the brake resistor is considered part of a moving train and that it is not treated in isolation. Perhaps it is not unreasonable to suggest that the Jubilee Line Extension utilises the best of both worlds. With a force cooled resistor, there is the inherent ability to direct warm exhaust air away from critical areas. This coupled with the fact that the unit is positioned to take advantage of natural airflows, allows the force cooling to be low speed and therefore quiet and of the highest reliability.
