During the last eight years, Alcoa has been developing a die casting process to produce components that have the performance require for structural members in critical automotive applications. Today, these components are being used in the Audi A8 automobile. During this development the integration of filling and thermal simulation into the die design process has been used to minimize proofing time and costs, and increase component quality. This paper provides examples that illustrate the value of these tools and the quality and properties of the cast components produced by the Alcoa Vacuum Die Casting Process.
