A Kawasaki Mule 2510 Utility Vehicle has been converted to a propane-fueled, hybrid electric vehicle. The drive system is connected in a series, hybrid configuration. The drive motor consists of a 7.5 kW motor and 5 kW generator version of the same permanent magnet, DC, industrial servo motor. The generator is directly coupled to the output shaft of the engine. The motor drive is connected to the input shaft of the transaxle through a tooth belt. A cooling system was designed and constructed to cool the motor and generator during operation. The motor was instrumented with thermocouples and the vehicle operated with and without the cooling system activated. Temperature measurements were made under different load conditions with and without the cooling system operating. Details of the vehicle design, cooling system design and temperature measurements taken under different load conditions will be presented.
