The characteristics of lead-acid batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and nickel metal hydrid (Ni-MH) batteries are compared. Results showed that the Ni-MH battery is more suited to EVs. A number of new materials and techniques is used in developing this battery. These include, for the nickel electrode, a high-energy pasted electrode using high-density, spherical, nickel hydroxide powder. For the negative electrode both high capacity and long service life were achieved by using a Lm (La-rich mischmetal) Ni5-based alloy, a treatment to make its surface porous, and the addition of a corrosion inhibitor. To improve the prevention of cell shorting a new separator with ultra-fine fibers that are far thinner than ordinary fibers was used. These techniques allowed to develop a Ni-MH battery providing a specific power of 200 W/kg and an energy density of 65 Wh/kg in EV modules.
