The Inductran system, an inductive charging system originally designed for industrial applications, has been thoroughly studied to assess its potential as cable-free electric road vehicle charging system in the frame of a Brite-Euram project supported by the European Commission. Battery measurements have been performed to study the parameters of the ferro-resonant charger in detail. The main aim of the project being the design and building of an on-street inductive charging station, including a full communication system has been realised. The positioning of the vehicle, the electrical and mechanical adaptability of the station for different vehicles and the operational safety have been studied in particular. To reduce the weight and the volume of the system components, the use of higher frequencies has been considered, assessed, experimented and calculated.
