In the framework of a project sponsored by the Commission of European Community a traction system with a newly conceived structure is developed in which advanced supercapacitors are integrated. The following major advantages are expected from the system: -increased energy availability due to load leveling effect and more efficient energy recovery; -high vehicle performance at any external condition (e. g. temperature) or storage battery situation (e. g. state of charge, age); -higher cycle life of the battery due to avoidance of high current values, which is cause of stress, especially at low state of charge. An 'ad hoc' developed simulation programm has been worked out and a test rig to test the full system on reduced scale has been realized. Preliminary tests have shown the possibility of achieving substantial energy saving over the urban operation. The supercapacitor integration can be extended to various types of energy sources, including advanced energy storage, fuell cells and hybrid systems.
