Fretting demage is possible wherever contacting surfaces experience vibration or cyclic stressing. Both these conditions are present in ships, whether in the engine room or on deck with winding and haulage gear, as well as in dockside installations such as cranes and also in moorings and hawsers. The problem is exacerbated in a marine environment by the presence of seawater or of a salt-laden atmosphere. The general case is best solved by an improvement in design, e.g. by machining a stress relieving groove in the tail shafts of ship's propellers. Surface treatment methods such as surface rolling of shafts, shot-peening or coating are also available. In steel ropes and hawsers, protection is afforded by incorporating a suitable lubricant into the rope in its construction. However, the method which is particularly applicable to immersed structures is cathodic protection, which not only retards fatigue crack growth but also results in considerable increase in the fretting fatigue strength.
