Reducing air pollution has become a global issue. Accordingly, the need to decrease the NOx emissions from marine traffic is a topic of concern. For this reason Niigata has developed a compact NOx reduction system that can be applied to small four-cycle marine main engines. The Selective Catalytic Reduction Method, which has many proven records for land use, has been choosen. In the course of development, the authors examined the following points and conducted the following tests on bord for the first time in Japan: Modifications necessary because of different requirements for land and marine applications; Element tests for marine application; On-board performance and control tests at sea. These examinations brought following knowledge and conclusions: a slight increase in the size of the tunnel enabled to install the De-NOx reactor inside, muffling the sound of the De-NOx reactor has a significant effect, and urea water is an effective reducing agent which is easy to handle. The marine exhaust gas NOx reduction performed satisfactorily.
