This paper presents an overview of recent work at Ford and The University of Michigan developing insights and tools to assist in the selection or 'design' of particle reinforced metal composites. It overviews bounds for approximating elastic and thermal properties. Strength-related properties such as tensile, creep and fatigue are treated using a combination of continuum mechanics models, systematic experimentation and microstructural control. The relative contributions of direct versus indirect strengthening are discussed. The issue of fabricated component cost is treated as well as an example of the application of this 'methodology' to design of a particle reinforced metal composite for a connecting rod.
