The high level of competition in the automotive industry and the consequent demand for time and cost reduction, especially for on-road vehicle testing, has focused the interest of development engineers on the dynamic test bench. In order to establish its validity for transient engine development, an extensive investigation has been carried out, starting from the correlation with road testing. From this analysis a methodology for tuning the dynamic test bed has been derived. Further investigation has verified the advantages of this type of testing, especially in terms of reproducibility and sensibility. Besides that, the engine can be easily fitted with advanced testing equipment, such as digital analyzers and fast response emission instrumentation. However the inherent difficulty of transient investigations in terms of test conditions and result interpretation, has suggested the development of a methodology to standardize the test procedure and the following data analysis. The aim of this methodology, which is still under development, is to get a kind of 'transient map' of an engine. This will significantly help the development engineer in comparing various solutions and in optimizing the control strategies.
